About Us

The geotechnical firm of Heller and Johnsen was founded in 1993 by Robert A. Heller, P.E. and Lawrence F. Johnsen, P.E. Since 1995, the firm has operated under the direction of Mr. Johnsen.

Our practice is focused on finding solutions to difficult geotechnical and foundation problems. We are active on national technical committees on grouting, codes, micropiles, earth retention and soil nailing. Larry Johnsen was the engineer-of-record for the first North American application of jet grouting for underpinning and excavation support, and has introduced deep dynamic compaction to Southern New England. In 1996, Larry Johnsen co-authored with James Graham a widely used vinyl sheet piling design manual. Larry Johnsen is chairman of the ASCE-GI Grouting Committee and the Deep Foundation Institute Codes and Standards Committee, as well as, co-chair of the organizing committee for the 4th International Conference on Grouting and Ground Improvement to be held in 2012.

Our technical staff includes six professional engineers with licenses in Arizona, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts (PE and SE), Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. Our size allows us to respond quickly to client needs. Download a company profile and Mr. Johnsen’s professional background.
