Company Profile

The geotechnical engineering firm of Heller and Johnsen was founded in 1993 by Robert A. Heller, P.E. and Lawrence F. Johnsen, P.E.. Since 1995, the firm has operated under the direction of Mr. Johnsen. In 1996, James S. Graham, P.E. joined as principal engineer.

Our practice is focused on finding solutions to difficult geotechnical and foundation problems. Our principals are active on national technical committees on grouting, pile foundations, sheet piles and timber. Larry Johnsen was the engineer-of-record for the first North American application of jet grouting for underpinning and excavation support, and has introduced deep dynamic compaction to Southern New England. Jim Graham co-authored the widely used "U.S. Steel Sheet Piling Design Manual" and chaired the DFI committee which recently completed the "Driven Foundation Piling Catalog" and "Driven Sheet Piling Catalog". In 1996, Larry Johnsen and Jim Graham co-authored a widely used vinyl sheet piling design manual.

Our technical staff includes six professional engineers with licenses in Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island  and Virginia. Our size allows us to respond quickly to client needs.
